Auditory Processing Therapy
Helping Children Understand, Listen, and Thrive
Does your child seem to hear you—but still struggles to follow directions, respond appropriately, or process spoken language in noisy environments? They may have an Auditory Processing Disorder (APD).
At MPTC, we offer evidence-based therapy to support children with auditory processing challenges, helping them grow in confidence, understanding, and communication.
🎧 What is Auditory Processing Disorder (APD)?
APD affects how the brain processes the sounds we hear. Children with APD typically have normal hearing but may have difficulty:
- Understanding speech in noisy or distracting environments
- Following directions, especially multi-step instructions
- Discriminating between similar sounds (e.g., “cat” vs. “cap”)
- Remembering information presented verbally
- Staying focused during listening tasks
These challenges can impact communication, learning, and daily routines—but with the right support, children can improve how they process and respond to spoken language.
✅ Important Note on Diagnosis:
A diagnosis of Auditory Processing Disorder must be made by an audiologist using specialized tests. While speech-language pathologists (SLPs) play a key role in treating APD, only audiologists can diagnose it.
If your child has not yet been evaluated for APD and is showing signs, we’re happy to refer you to a licensed audiologist before beginning treatment.
Evidence-Based Treatment Techniques We Use:
🧠 Auditory Skills Training
We use structured activities to strengthen:
- Auditory discrimination
- Auditory memory and sequencing
- Understanding speech in background noise (auditory figure-ground)
- Sound blending and segmentation for reading support
📖 Language & Listening Comprehension Strategies
We also address language-based skills that impact processing:
- Following directions
- Vocabulary development
- Using strategies like chunking and visual imagery to support understanding
💬 Self-Advocacy & Compensatory Tools
We teach children how to:
- Ask for repetition or clarification
- Use visual aids or written instructions
- Advocate for accommodations in school and social settings
🎯 Environmental & School Support
We collaborate with families and educators to reduce background noise, adjust classroom environments, and recommend assistive listening devices if appropriate.
🎲 Fun, Multisensory Practice
Therapy is interactive, play-based, and engaging. We make listening fun through games and movement that support attention and learning.
