Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy

At MPTC, our caring, expert therapists have undergone the extensive, specialized training needed to provide orofacial myofunctional therapy. The goals of this type of therapy include promoting proper tongue and lip positions as well as improved chewing, swallowing, breathing, and use of facial muscles.

Have you noticed your child is a messy eater or has other mouth/oral issues?

Does your child leave lips open when chewing? Drink a lot to wash down the food during a meal? Does your child’s tongue come forward when swallowing? Are the lips and tongue in odd positions when chewing or speaking? Did your child suck their thumb or fingers past 5 years of age? Has your child been in therapy to correct “tongue thrusting” or “lisping” without success?

We can help your child improve habits involving the tongue, lips, or jaw.

The first step is to bring your child in so we can complete our comprehensive assessment.

Our assessment will include finding the answers to these key questions:

    • Are there any respiratory issues (such as asthma, snoring, sleep apnea, enlarged tonsils, or adenoids)?
    • Are there any difficulties your child is having in using lips, tongue, and jaw (myofunctional) while eating, swallowing, or talking?
    • Are there issues with how your child’s teeth have developed? We will consider any previous consults with the orthodontist /dentist.

Once we’ve completed the assessment, we will customize a treatment plan that helps your child improve as much as possible the habits that involve lips, tongue, and jaw.

Orofacial myofunctional disorders are treated most efficiently when we work as a team. We may refer you or contact experts such as your dentist, an orthodontist, oral and maxillofacial surgeon, otolaryngologist (ENT), allergist, and/or pediatrician during this process to provide the most comprehensive program.
