Hand Function/Fine Motor Skills

Fine motor skills are skills related to the overall use of the hand (overall hand dexterity). Occupational therapy helps a child achieve the following:

  • Coordination: Being able to use hands and arms in an effective, efficient manner in order to complete a task
  • Crossing the midline spontaneously: Being able to bring the upper extremities across the body to perform desired actions
  • Bilateral Integration: Being able to coordinate two hands together and use them in conjunction with one another without delay or difficulty
  • Motor Planning: Being able to carry out a novel verbal or written direction without delay
